• A Trophy from the Trenches in France

An Ashfield lady, (Miss F. Boswell), in sending a number of socks and other gifts to Australian soldiers, …. sent with… copies of this picture printed in colour – the British Bulldog and the Union Jack. She has just received this one from Corporal Henry William Casselden, of the 19th Battalion, who states: - “I found it in a trench. It has been at Ypres and at Flers on the Somme. At the latter place I carried it in a charge. It has also gone the rounds of several hospitals, for I was knocked in the “hop-over”. So it ought to be a decent souvenir. I have not been able to hear anything of the Private William Johnson, who appears to have received it from you in the first place, and who wrote on it the request that, should it be picked up by anyone, it might be sent to Miss Boswell.” The lady’s name and address had accompanied the gifts, which were not addressed to any individual soldiers, but merely bore the words: “For the trenches” Under this line, on the back of the picture, the recipient had written: “Presented to Private William Johnson, 11/19th Battalion, No 4452, by Miss F. R. Boswell, Chiswick, Wells Avenue, Ashfield, Sydney, New South Wales.” William Johnson MM - 19th Australian Infantry Battalion. Henry William Casselden - 19th Australian Infantry Battalion.
