At 5 AM we sail towards the heads which we passed at 10 oclock. 12/09/15 At sea we pass one vessel. Sea very calm many boys sick. We off Cape Otway at Midday. 13/09/15 At sea no land sighted. Sea very rough and everybody sick. I wrote a letter home. 14/09/15 At sea no land sighted. Were off Addalaide at midday and at midnight in great Aus Bight. Sea very rough and strong gales. In the evening a seaplane flew across Red Sea. 3/11/2015 In the Red Sea which is a little choppy climate nice and cool with a fresh breeze. Passed several vessels. No land sighted. We bury the ships cook at sea. 4/11/15 In the Red Sea several vessels sighted also light house. Passed Mt Lili (? Sinai) where Moses received the 10 commandments. Fine mountain cenery Egyptian and Arabian. In the evening we anchor at Suez. 5/11/15 At Port Suez in the entrance to Suez Cananal climate cool. Shipping and arabs very interesting anchored in bay all day. Arabian water police very amusing with little yacts. 6/11/15 Disembarked at Suez and entrained for Cairo beautiful scenery at Suez. Fighting amongst the Arabs. Beautiful scenery along line to Cairo. We see many Camal trains donkeys and Buffalo cattle. 7/11/15 Arrived at Zeitoun camp near Heliopolis and went in Cairo. I went by tram to the Pyramids got photographed on the camal. Crossed the river Nile. Went through the Pyramids and phinks. Saw the Mummeys tomb. I then came back to Cairo and went through several ancient buildings. 8/11/15 At Zeitoun camp. Visited the ancient Holy Well and the Virgin Marys tree at 315 years old and the Marys tomb. We had a parade on the desert. We drank the water from the well which was turned from salt to fresh water. 9/11/15 At Zeitoun camp went on march to Ostrich farm. At night went to Heliopolis went through the first Aus general hospital with 500 rooms. 10/11/15 At Zeitoun camp had our first gun drill. I volunteered for Galapoli but was unsuccessful. I saw several Wonthaggi Boys. 11/11/15 At Zeitoun camp went on march through Zetioun and Heliopolis. Riots between Arabs and soldiers. Police arrest many natives. 12/11/2015 Went from Zeitoun camp to Oasis camp at night went to Heliopolis. Climate very hot and dusty. 13/11/2015 At Oasis camp climate very hot also sand storm. We get heavily shelled and have a very narrow escape Aus Division make an attack after a very heavy bombardment. They take three line of trenches with very heavy casualties. The Infintry make a raid on the night of 15/3/17 and find no germans in trenches. 16/3/17 In Action on Somme. Our Infintry make another raid with the same results. No germans in trenches, then they discover that the trenches are evacuated, they follow up the advance with very little opposition. 17/3/17 The advance commences, many villages are taken and Bapaume falls, with the germans fighting a rear guard action. Bapaume and villages in flames. 18/3/17 We prepare to follow up with Field Artillery. We reach gun volley. I go on to Bapaume with Colonel. We cut our way through wire to get horses through. The No-mans land is strewn with dead Australians, Tommies and scotch troops, there are thousands of Germans. The sights are fearful. It is bitterly cold. 19/3/17 We leave gun Valley(?) at day break with Colonel and go over the captured ground, again there are many mines being exploded by the germans in the cross roads. They are very dangerous and leave enormous craters. We go to Bapaume which is still burning, there are many villages burning. Also the wells are poisoned, the fruit trees are chopped down. 20/3/17 We leave gun valley again at day break. The batteries have advanced to the sunken road near XXXXXXXX. We go forward in search of new gun positions which are at Villers. Also Headquarters dugout which was left mined by enemy but the engineers clear the mines. We then go to Bapaume where I wait for Colonel and bring him back to Villers. It is very dark and it is snowing. I have a weird experience getting back to the gun valley across No-mans land. I reach gun valley safely. 21/3/17 I leave gun valley at day break, pick up colonel a Villers and go searching for more gun positions which are perched in sunken road near Happxxxxxxx. The germans are still xxxxxand fighting in strong rearguard action across the bamxxx road. We go to Beaxxxx, the germans are fighting very hard near Bullecourte. I go back to gun valley again and camp. 22/3/17 At gun valley all day, the light railway is being rushed up to bring up supplies and ammunition. The germans are still falling back t the Hindenburg line. 23/3/17 I leave gun valley at daybreak, pick up colonel at velles and go to Bupume which the ememy is shelling. There are heavy batteries in action at Happilxxxxxx and doing good work. I go back to gun valley and camp the night. 24/3/17 At gun valley we are preparing to advance with batteries, the positions are all ready for them. I go to viler on and go to. 25/3/17 At gun valley preparing to advance to forward positions the advance is setting. 26/3/17 I leave gun valleyat daybreak, pick up colonel at viler and go to Bapume xxxxxxxxx &. I go back at gun valley again and camp at night. 27/3/17 The road across the old Somme battle front is being rushed up with great rapidity and will soon be ready for artillery to cross. 28/3/17 We are all ready to move to forward positions. It is extremely cold and mud awful. 29/3/17 I leave gun valley at day break, pick up colonel at vileers. Our brigade moves forward and have great difficulties crossing no mans land. It takes all day to get brigade up. Headquarters are stationed at beaxxxxx, our wagon lines at villlers. Our batteries go into action near Bamxxxx road. We get reinforcements. One of our drivers get wounded with bombs. 30/3/17 Our batteries are in action and the advance is finished which was about ten miles. Germans are captured in Bapume after exploding the mines and town hall. We establish our wagon lines at viler. 31/3/17 At villersxxxx everything gets settled down on the Hinenburg line. Our wagon lines are at vilers xxxxxx. There is nothing of importance happens until the germans launch an attack at Bullecourte and break through just after easter Monday, we counter attack and drive him back inflicting heavy casualties and many prisoners. We settle down at villers xxxxxx till the 26 of June 1917. 27/6/17 We leave the Hindenburg line front and make tracks for Ypres, we travel all day till we reach bephxxxxxx where we stop till the 3/7/17. 4/7/17 We leave Bepancourte enroute for Beacourte. Remained there for about a week, cleaning up and testing the guns. We then made tracks for Ypres, arrived there safely but got heavily shelled as soon as we pull in, but there are no casualties. Then we start and prepare for an offensive which comes af'm the 31st July 1917, it was the most terrific bombardment that ever took place. Our own infintry and soldiers hrrp, take all objectives but suffer heavy casualties. We remain at Ypres till September, taking part in all battles. I go on leave then the Brigade pull out for their weeks spell to St Omeo. After three weeks spell we prepare for action again and go back to Ypres. We pull in to Deahybuck near yellebeche lake. Enemy airaplanes heavily bomb all night. We get into action and remain in till about the end of October. We then pull from the Ypres front down to NMeures which is very quiet. We go into action and remain in till the middle of December. We then pull out for a tangscent. I go on leave again and the Brigade travels on to Mont cavel. Everything is frozen and the roads very difficult. I am back from leave and join the Brigade here. We remain there for six weeks and have a good time living with the French people. We then prepare for action again and track it back to Messines. We remain in action there till March. The big German offensive commences and the French are loosing ground rapidly. The Germans then break through on an old Somme front. We are then told to pack up which we do hunanblly and entrain near Bunbar. We travel in train all day and night and at day break disentrain at Amiens and track it to germaine. At night we track it to Bonnay and into action and stop the German advance in Armiens. The Germans make many attempts to break through us but they all fail. We shift about from one sector to another a good deal. I beoult all leave Orly and surrounding villages, we have a good time. We remain about this front till the big offensive starts in August on the 18th of August 1918. We hole up at Nelles Badenux. We put down a splendid barrage taking the Germans by surprise and with the help of tanks and armoured cars we break through and advance eight miles the first day taking many thousand prisoners and hundreds of guns. We continue to push the Germans through Parnone to the Hindenburg Line, advancing every day and fighting is hard and severe and water scarce. We reach the Hindenburg Line about the twenty fifth of December and on the 29th we cover the Americans in the taking of Bellicourte. The fighting is very hard and severe. We get into Bellicourte with Guro, but could not remain there. The enemy barrage was to (sic) heavy. We have many casualties. By the end of the day all objectives have been taken including the linel and the Villages of Nasary, Behavanti and Eatres. We remain here for a few days then we shift up to Naumory, where i get wounded on the 10/10/18. I am sent to Bosille and from there to Rouen and from there to the Duston War Hospital, Northhampton, England. I am put to bed and a piece of shell is taken out of my leg, it is very sore. I am put in splints for fracture treatment. After three weeks I go under xrays which shows my leg badly broched about but doing well. I then go to bed for another three weeks. I get up about the end of November and am then put on a short back splint and can get about in a wheel chair and have a good time. I remain in this hospital untill the 19 Dec 1918and then i am sent the 1st Australian Aux Hospital Hairfield(sic) Park, Harefield Denham, Middlesex, Engl. I spend xmas here and have a very enjoyable time. We have a visit from General Birdwood on the 27th of Dec. I have an operation and some loose bone is removed from my leg. I am down in bed again. I am boarded and mashed B 2 B and expect to shortly leave here for Australia. 4/1/19 I am still at Harefield and my leg is doing splendidly. 20/1/19 I leave Harefield for Weymouth. Waiting for a boat for return to Australia, I am put on a boat sail for the Uighendites. The weather is very cold and wet. I remain in camp at Monte Video, receiving treatment there untill the 5th of March 1919. I then paecide on 14 days furlough to Scotland. I arrive at Mr Douglas Campbettoun on the 7th and on the 9th get a telegram to report back to camp immediately for embarkation to Australia. We leave Weymouth eight o'clock Sunday morning 10/3/19 and embark at 3 o'clock on H.M.T. Cyastga at Plymouth. We leave Plymouth Sound on St Patrick’s Day at 12 o'clock. 17/3/19 On 19 we are nearing Gibraltar and have had nice calm sea all the way. 25/3/19 In the Mediterranean Sea, passed Malta and nearing Egypt, sea very calm and weather lovely and cool. On 26/3/19 we anchor at Port Said, leave is given so we break ship and go into town. Our vessel the Cyastga is cancelled for Australia so we transhile and go into a rest camp for three days. We then board the Cyastga again and sail to Alexandria. We get to Alexandria on 2/4/19 and anchor outside. We then apply for leave and go Ashore. We are three days on the Cyastga when we pull alongside the Hospital ship Dunluce Castle on which we embark. We leave Alexandria on the sixth for Port Said again and leave agian the same night up the canal and out into the Red Sea. George Haines
