Elmer's experience of active service was shortlived. He enlisted early, joining the 8th Battalion, but was shot ion the eye and blinded in the course of the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April, 1915. He spent the rest of the war at St Dunstan's Red Cross Hospital in Birmingham, undergoing rehabilitation and learning to be a masseur. His memories of St Dunstan's were so fond, that in later years he named his house after it.His good friend, from Spotswood, Norman Bear visited Elmer at St Dunstan's in January 1917
