South East Qld records NICHOLSON, Rupert, F. 5392. Rupert Nicholson, a short, thick set twenty one year old stockman from the Langlo Downs Station at Charleville in Queensland, enlisted in the AIF at Toowoomba on 11 February 1916. His father Frederick was named next of kin and training commenced at 11Depot Battalion at Enoggera. Allotted to the 14th reinforcements to the 26th Battalion (7th Brigade, 2nd Division), Nicholson left Brisbane on 8 August bound for England, where a further two months of training followed in camps on the Salisbury Plain. Crossing to the 2nd Division’s Base Depot in France, Nicholson joined his unit in the freezing and sodden trenches of the Somme Valley on 12 February 1917 and was posted to ‘A’ Company. Less than three weeks later he was wounded in the leg by grenade fragments during an attack on enemy trenches at Warlencourt and was evacuated to hospital in Rouen for treatment. After a few weeks of convalescence Nicholson returned to duty on 9 April, joining his unit as it took part in the operations north east of Bapaume. On 3 May the unit acted in divisional reserve at the successful second battle of Bullecourt, after which it retired behind the line to prepare for the battles to be fought later in the year in Flanders. In September, the unit moved behind Ypres in Belgium and, on 20 September, moved to trenches west of Bellewaarde Lake on the Westhoek Ridge, acting in support of the 28th Battalion in the battle of the Menin Road. After the objectives had been taken the 26th commenced work on a communications trench to the new front lines. Rupert Nicholson was killed by a shell whilst in the trenches on Westhoek Ridge. He was buried where he died but no precise location of the grave was noted (McDonald, 6126)
