Gordon Holmes Robertson was born in 1885 near Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia and was educated at Toowoomba Grammar School (1899 - 1900). He voluntarily enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in August 1914 at Toowoomba, two weeks after the declaration of war. He stated that he was single and a grazier aged 29 years. He was assigned to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment and sailed after five weeks preparation. After disembarking in Egypt the 2LHR undertook further training and, in May 1915, was, as an unmounted unit, deploy to Gallipoli to support the Infantry. The men of the 2LHR landed at Anzac on 12 May and moved into the front-line within hours. One of the first casualties was Trooper Robertson who sustained a gun shot wound to the abdomen. He was evacuated to the Hospital Ship Gascon where he died on 13 May 1915. He was buried at sea.
