William Edward Solomon was born in about 1897 in Penzance, Cornwall, England and attended Saint Mary's Catholic Boys School at Penzance. In 1916 he was a labourer living in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He voluntarily enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in February 1916 at Brisbane stating he was single and aged 22 years. He was assigned to the 25th Infantry Battalion and, after training in England, was posted to France where he joined the Battalion at Fricourt. During April the men remained in The Somme and it was near Noreuil, France that Private Solomon was wounded in action which saw him admitted to the No 1 Australian General Hospital at Rouen. Three months later he re-joined the Battalion which was in camp near St Omer, France preparing for the Battle of Menin Road in Belgium. This was followed up with the capture of Broodseinde Ridge on the 4th of October 1917 during which Private Solomon was Killed in Action. He has no known grave and is commemorated on The Menin Gate Memorial at Ieper, Belgium.
