Enlisted as a gunner in the 6th Field Artillery Brigade on the 25th October 1915. Whilst serving in France he was admitted to hospital in Rouen suffering from a contusion to the side as the result of a kick to his right side. Whilst in hospital, he attested to an enquiry that he had received the injury in France but not whilst performing military duties. He was further transferred to hospital in London where he was charged with being absent without leave for 1 day on the 17th September 1917. Sgt Beard returned to Melbourne on the HMAT Borda and was discharged on the 11th May 1919. He died in the Caulfield Military Hospital on the 22nd December 1936.
